Maggie Hassan

About Maggie

Maggie Hassan was elected to the New Hampshire State Senate in November 2004 and currently serves as the Senate Majority Leader.

As an attorney, Maggie began her career in public service in 2000 when Governor Shaheen asked her to serve as an advocate on the Advisory Committee to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission. Maggie and her husband Tom, an educator and school administrator, have extensive knowledge of the public school system as the parents of Ben, a graduate of the Exeter school system and who has severe disabilities, and Meg, who is a typical student. Maggie has also represented school systems in special education matters, providing her with multiple perspectives on the challenges facing schools.

Maggie's work on the Adequacy in Education Commission was the catalyst for her to get more deeply involved in politics, which led to her decision to run for the New Hampshire Senate. As a Senator, Maggie has developed a reputation as a smart legislator who works in a bipartisan manner to find creative solutions to tough problems. Maggie knows we all juggle so many things in life – work, kids, our friends and family – and that we need our government to work for us, to solve problems and provide opportunities for our families. She recognizes that job number one for elected leaders – Democrat or Republican – is to work together to tackle our common challenges.

Maggie has focused on keeping taxes low; creating good jobs; living within our means with a balanced budget; providing the best access we can to high-quality, affordable health care; making sure every child has the chance to get a 21st century education; and protecting the natural beauty and environment of New Hampshire.

Maggie represents the towns of East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Kingston, Newfields, Newmarket, Newton, Seabrook, South Hampton and Stratham.

She lives in Exeter with her husband, Tom and children, Ben and Meg and the family dog, Honey Mae.
